Elderly evicted to make way for gated community

Hackney Council is set to approve a plan to demolish sheltered homes for the elderly with an exclusive gated community.
The Council gave Bayton Court on London Fields to Hanover in Hackney (HiH) in 2002 along with 29 other homes for the elderly. Since then, HiH hasn’t found enough funds to be able to meet its plans and, in anticipation of permission being granted, have started to move the elderly out of Bayton Court so that it can be sold.
They originally submitted the plans for approval last year but withdrew them after a public meeting organised by Open Dalston. The resubmitted plans are substantially the same as those that were withdrawn.
Residents of the Blackstone Estate attended a meeting in August with the developers to voice their concerns over, amongst other things, the noise that was likely to be generated from the roof-terraces of the dense new development, and having to live next to a car park. The Council’s planning meeting is on September 3rd.
