Parking blitz slashes traders’ profits

One day son, all this will be yours… Some traders on Broadway Market have had their profits for the day virtually eaten away by a surprise blitz by parking inspectors.

Operating for three years, the market had, until recently, been largely ignored by parking inspectors in recognition of the difficulty of running the market without appropriate bays for traders.

This all changed recently when up to 20 tickets where served on vehicles, many of which were being loaded or unloaded at the time.

“It was bad enough being issued tickets but when this was done while traders were loading at the end of the day makes us very confused,” said Louise Brewood, chair of Broadway Market Traders and Residents Association. “How is the market to run if there is nowhere to load and unload? There has been no consultation on this move. If the Council had just let us know that they were going to start enforcement we may have been able to advise the traders of the change in arrangements.”

A petition of traders is being submitted to the Council to protest at the sudden change of policy.
