Empire grabs residents’ light
The Hackney Empire has won permission to go ahead with the development on Sylvester Path that could turn the historic path into a gloomy alley. At the planning meeting on Wednesday protestors, headed by local residents Jean Field and Lucy Teather, secured a slight amendment to the plan that could see the preservation of part of the 200 year-old wall at the approach to the path but the development would still remove the light from properties on the path.
“Any attempt to knock down the historic wall will be sheer vandalism,” said Mrs Field.
Support for the redevelopment came from Cllr Jessica Webb, the same Councillor who supported the demolition of Tony’s Cafe on Broadway Market in 2004.
